Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick today pleaded guilty at a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson. A sentencing date was set for December 10, 2007.
Vick plead guilty to one criminal county of "Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture", and admits to purchasing pit bulls and purchasing and developing property for the purpose of dogfighting and training dogs for dogfighting.
"What I did was very immature...I need to grow up." Wow. It was only immaturity?
Vick still doesn't get it. He doesn't need to grow up; he is grown up! Michael Vick consciously chose - as a grown-up/adult - to be mean, violent, immoral, dishonest, and deceitful. His indifference to life is at the least disturbing. His extreme lack of integrity is pathetic; how ugly to blame family and friends for "taking advantage of my generosity" and not owning-up from the get-go.
Vick blames his immaturity for lying to his employers and his fans? What a wonderful legal precedent: those choosing to embrace his same personal characteristics can now claim immaturity.
Vick has agreed to pay for all costs related to the care and euthanasia of dogs rescued in the bust at his property in Surry County. That should set him back several thousand dollars.
I really hope Vick gets the full 5 year sentence and expulsion from the NFL. To claim immaturity is to minimize the severity of his actions. How many of us could claim immaturity as a reason for killing animals - and return to our role-model careers? His sense of entitlement is appalling.
Lucky Vick would still live the good life if he can't return to his football career. Vick will still have more money than most people on earth - he's made over $61 million from football alone, thus far. Vick won't have to struggle to keep himself alive; he's the lucky dog.
