I've missed you and hope you all are doing well (though I see that it's been a long time, too, since you've blogged). Nonetheless....
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'm writing about our good boy Quasar, 14 years and 9 months old as of July 4.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Quasar was diagnosed March 15 with osteosarcoma in his right distal radius (right foreleg). We had noticed him limping when he ran out to greet my husband at the car when he came home from work. We gave him some leftover Rimadyl for a week, but it didn't stop the limping so we took him to our longtime vet. She thought it best to x-ray his leg given his age and that he's a long-legged dog. The X-ray showed osteosarcoma. Me being me, I asked for a consult with a specialist just to be sure. She suggested a specialist practice that is locally owned and I made an appointment there and we saw an oncologist who confirmed the diagnosis.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Interestingly, the oncologist is one of several vets in the U.S. who practices both conventional and traditional Chinese veterinary medicine. Again, given his age, we decided on palliative care. Radiation therapy is supposed to work great for pain, but it can deteriorate the bone so we decided against that. Instead, we decided to treat Quasar's pain with daily doses of Rimadyl (carprofen) and Gabapentin, and a powdered mix of Chinese plants and herbs. To treat both his pain and to strengthen the bone, he is getting injections of Zoledronate every 3 to 4 weeks. (Zoledronate is akin to "Boniva" treatments for people with osteoporosis.) To treat the tumor, he is also getting a powdered Chinese mix of plants/herbs; this is expected to shrink the vessels that feed the tumor and slow its growth, and we have no expectation that it is curative. We brought up the subject of CBD oil with our vet and she perked right up! Veterinarians are not allowed to prescribe CBD (here in the U.S.), but since we asked she told us which one to get (actually a concentrated hemp CBD for oral use) and where to get it. Again, this CBD is strictly for palliative purpose.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Quasar sees the oncologist every 3 or 4 weeks, and saw her a couple of days ago. His liver enzymes were a bit higher than his last visit, so we decided to put him on daily doses of "Hepato Support" (main ingredient is milk thistle).

Quasar is doing Greyt! His vet said most dogs with osteosarcoma at 3 months have difficulty walking if they are able to walk. We are so happy that Quasar still has a Greyt quality of life (except for when we don't give him as many treats as he wants!). We hope he sees his his 15th birthday in October.

I would love to hear from others that are using "alternative" treatments.

I've attached a couple photos of his leg and video of him from earlier this month. (Excuse our yard.)

This is a photo of our foster dog Sam.

We've had Sam for about a month. He is so gentle and quiet and sweet, and rambunctious when it comes to seeing a leash or "Mom" or "Dad" coming home. He's big, too! 80 pounds! Interested in adopting? He is a foster dog with ReGAP here in southeast Michigan.

Last week Sam bit Quasar, kind of shredding his ear. They were doing that dog dance where they both get worked up over a passing dog, then spin in circles and growl and snap at each other. Sam's snap connected with Quasar's ear. However, I think this was provoked by Mr. Q.

Quasar's ear wouldn't stop bleeding after an hour (ear is filled with veins!) so we took him down the street to the emergency vet. WHOA! The vet wanted $622.00 for Plan A. umm, show me Plan B. That was just under $400. So I said, I'll pay the office visit and the antibiotic -- $150 and twice what our vet would charge. Luckily I had some Tramadol (pain med) left over from Star's illness.

So we returned home and spent hours trying to stop the bleeding and finally got Quasar's ear bandaged and gave him the antibiotic. The next morning we were able to remove the bandage and flush it out with water, hydrogen peroxide, then a final flush with the antiseptic Chlorhexiderm. Then bandaged again. It's been almost a week, and we've done a lot of cleaning, bandaging, giving Tramadol and antibiotic. Mr. Q is recovering, but he still yelps if we touch his ears.

So there went our long weekend away.... We didn't want to bloody up where we'd be staying.

Sam really is a sweetheart.

Star girl passed Saturday morning, after having been diagnosed with bone cancer in October. She was 8 years old. We love her dearly and deeply. We loved how happy she was, her little stubby tail and butt wag, her chattering teeth (Lady Chatterly was a nickname!). I think she didn't know she was a greyhound; she loved to roll in mud, jump in ponds, drink lake water, lie in the snow and on driveways. She was our "Binky." I believe she had a happy life with us; I know she made our lives happier.

Star on the beach at Lake Huron, September 2012

A few weeks ago we took Quasar and Star with us for a few days in a little cottage on the beach of Lake Huron. It was rather chilly, but the four of us had a good time. The dogs got to sniff all over the place (deer, raccoon, who knows what else!), and Star waded through the Lake's warm water.

Since last year, Star has been dealing with a probably ACL injury in her left leg. With some pain meds and a lot of rest (no more long walks), her leg got better. Sometime in May, we noticed she was favoring her right leg somewhat. However, the episode in June with her vomiting blood (and no conclusive diagnosis, except perhaps an infection) had us concerned with her gastric problems. They cleared up, too.

In August, we noticed her right leg was getting worse, and in September started her on Metacam for the pain. However, after a short while her leg became increasingly worse with her sometimes sliding down on it. The vet sent us to an orthopedic specialist on Thursday. Sadly, the problem was not her ACL. After looking at a few radiographs, the specialist diagnosed probable osteosarcoma. I felt rather punched in the gut.

My husband and I went with Star today to our usual Vet. After much discussion about surgical and chemotherapy alternatives, we have decided to follow a treatment of palliative care. In addition to the metacam, we've added tramadol to treat the pain.

Star is still one happy girl with a fantastic appetite, her eyes are bright, and life is good (park visits and car rides on our agenda!).

Star at the Vet's office on Friday.

Star visited the vet again last Friday. She is doing so much better!

Star lost about 8 pounds while she was sick, and the vet wants her to gain back another 4 pounds or so, but she still has to stay on her prescription gastrointestinal food. She no longer needs the antibiotic or the sucralfate, but she does need to take Tums twice a day. (And here we thought it was just for people!)

So the girl is good, though she goes back to the vet in a month for one more checkup.

We're pretty happy over here, and I suspect that she is, too. Thanks for all your good wishes and kind words; I'm sure that they helped greytly!detroit doghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03636798112379229385noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354559675101812834.post-43059893790598287762012-06-19T13:54:00.001-04:002019-04-19T14:31:21.523-04:00Update on Star's Medical Emergency

As you can see from the photo above, Star is enjoying a little shade-time in this 92-degree heat.

Star is doing much better, though not as well - yet - as we had hoped. She had a vet appointment last Friday, and they still found some blood in her stool. So, she's on another round of antibiotics and Sulcrafate, and is still eating only Hill's Prescription Diet i/d for Canines.

However, Star's appetite is back in a big way, though we are still not allowed to give her any treats. So, by default, this means that Quasar doesn't get any treats. And they both want treats (if the treat jar is even nudged, they come a running!). The extra good news, though, is that they are both losing a few pounds to get back to "retirement" weight (no more than 5 lbs. over their racing weight).

Part of Star's problem, we believe, is that she will eat anything -- I mean anything! We had a small bbq on Saturday with family in town, and as we cleaned the grill she was trying to eat all the scrapings! She's still looking for tidbits!

Star has another vet appointment on Friday, so I'll let you all know how she's doing on that day.

Stay cool in this heat!

Star girldog

Earlier this week, Star wanted to go outside three times (!) in the middle of the night. She's a dog that usually sleeps right through the night, so after the third time, my sleepy grumpy self finally thought that maybe something isn't right. I kept an eye on her during the day and went out that evening.

When I returned, I noticed a small puddle of what looked like red Kool-Aid. My husband and I looked at it, thought that perhaps she'd gotten into the strawberry patch, but I just worried about her for the next twenty minutes -- at which time she vomited a bucket-full of this stuff and we figured immediately: It's BLOOD! (DUH!) I took a photograph of the vomit, put Star in my car (where she continued to vomit) and raced her to the emergency vet a few blocks over.

The emergency vet took an x-ray of her tummy and couldn't see anything unusual but gave her an injection of Cerenia (for nausea) and sent her home with Sucralfate (medicine used to treat ulcers).

The next day, Star went to see her usual vet at Platz Animal Hospital. Dr. Platz (whom I've known since 1985!) decided to keep her overnight for testing and observation. When I returned the next day, Dr. Platz told me that they did a radiograph and other blood tests and urinalysis, and could find neither an ulcer nor a tumor (whew!), but that she does have about a pint of blood in her tummy, and that he suspects she has some kind of infection (which is still dangerous). [Star eats anything -- dirt, poop, you name it, but after checking our home and garage, it didn't appear that'd she'd gotten into anything toxic. However, she had been on Rimadyl and Tramadol for the two weeks before, due to pulled ligaments in both her hind legs -- which is another story unto itself.]

So Star is home from the vet, on a prescription antibiotic and Sucralfate, and is eating Hill's Prescription Diet i/d for gastrointestinal health. She goes back to the vet next week, at which point we'll assess if the next step is an MRI or scope. She seems to have perked up a bit, which is good news.

So, what does bloody dog vomit look like? I'll refrain from posting the photo, but I will tell you that she had the "not-as-horrid-as-it-could-be" kind: that is, it is "undigested" blood, clear red looking like a Kool-Aid or thin syrup. The "horrid" vomit is dark red and looks like it has coffee grounds in it. However, if your dog is vomiting either type, it's still an emergency and you need to get your dog to the vet NOW.

I'll keep you all updated. (And I'll do a sepate post on dog vomiting blood - with pictures, just for "educational" purposes.)

So, here are some tips for keeping your pets (and maybe yourself!) safe in this summer heat. Please feel free to add your suggestions!

Also, PLEASE read these tips at the ASPCA web site.

If you have indoor pets, PLEASE be sure that their crate and/or cage or aquarium or living space is NOT in the path of direct sunlight.

Be sure to provide plenty of water for your animal. If you're both away from home, carry a bottle or container filled with fresh, cool water.

Leave your pets at home if possible (no car rides!).

If you must take your pet along for the ride, don’t leave your pets alone in vehicles. Even with the windows open, a parked car can quickly become a furnace in a very short time (minutes).

Exercise your pet in the cooler temps of early morning or evening; or forego exercise in this heat. Pets' paws can sustain burns or injuries on sidewalks and asphalt. Rethink the necessity for a walk in these high temps.

Provide plenty of shade for outside pets. Bring your pet inside during the heat of the day and let them rest in a cool part of your house (basements are very cool if you don't have a/c).

Older and overweight pets are more susceptible to heat exhaustion, so take special care!

Watch for signs of heat stress—heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red tongue.

If you believe your pet is suffering from heat exhaustion, contact your veterinarian right away—it could save your pet's life. You can help bring your dog’s body temperature down by sponging it down with cool water, but don’t try to place him in a bath or douse him with buckets of water since this can send a pet into shock.

Here's a product for your pup that you might be interested in checking out -- it's a "Canine Cooler" bed. (I'm thinking of getting a couple of these for the greyhounds that work the summer events for Michigan ReGAP.)

I've decided to start a pet sitting and concierge business, and I'm trying to decide on a name. Perhaps you can offer some suggestions, or tell me what you think about these names (insert the words "Pet Concierge" after each):

Four Seasons

Greyt Lakes

Lakeshore

Mr. Q (after our boy Quasar)

Sirius

What's to remember?

Well, I live in Michigan, and in a city bordered by Detroit and the Grosse Pointes (how's that for diversity?) -- so we live near the shore.

Although it's just me starting out, I might hire staff eventually.

I'm not a fan of "cute."

There are already lots of businesses with the names "Buddy" or "Pal" in them; I don't want to b e one of them.

I'd like something easygoing, professional, memorable, and recognizable.

The business will not take care of snakes, or farm animals.

Thanks!

This is just heartbreaking.

Of course, we are all aware of the mounting sadness and mounting tragedies in Japan since the devastating earthquake and tsunami last week. It's difficult to understand how any living being has survived, and yet there have been amazing stories of survivors -- a man clinging to the roof of his house 10 miles at sea, an uninjured infant found under rubble several days later, a wandering horse by the roadside, a cow standing in the middle of a field, two dogs in Sendai that survived by breaking free of their ropes and running up the exterior stairs of their owner's home, and here two pals staying by each other. Surely after seeing a video like this one can only further accept and value life in all its forms -- human, canine, whatever.... Let's say a prayer for all.

I'll try to find out how we can help the animal life in Japan that is affected, and will post information soon.detroit doghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03636798112379229385noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354559675101812834.post-52758367936939761162011-03-07T20:59:00.000-05:002011-03-07T20:59:23.746-05:00Southeast Michigan's Monroe County Busts Dog Fighting RingHere's a link to the story at The Detroit Free Press.

This is a story about some real heinous people, and has some photos of the dogs that were rescued (which are not all "Pit Bull" -- and include one small fluffy dog that was probably going to be used for bait). Two dogs were fatally wounded in fighting. The participants are residents of both Michigan and other states.

It appears that the dogs were massacred because business was poor, and the dogs were deemed unadoptable because they are bred and raised for sport and recreation (and not as pets). Such similarities to racing greyhounds' plight.

Unfortunately, I don't know whom to contact to demand an investigation into and revision of rules and policies in the sled dog industry. Michigan State Police are searching for a lost colleague: K9 cop named "Bane" (a mostly black German Shepherd Dog).

You can help! Read this article for more information: http://www.clickondetroit.com/family/25855893/detail.html
Check this new web site: http://www.findbane.com/ You can read updates, and find links to the Find Bane Facebook page and make donations for the reward (which is now at $2,500).

Bane is lost in the area of Ocqueoc, in Presque Isle County in the northeastern area of Michigan's lower peninsula. It's a heavily wooded area. Bane is a search-and-rescue/tracking dog, that is said to be a gentle dog that can easily be approached.

The following was posted today on "Fine Bane" Facebook page:

The Facts:

by Find Bane on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 5:24pm

Due to the HUGE number of people visiting this page.......thanks to all........I am going to post this note to let the folks that join late know the scoop.

On 11/13/10 I was searching a tag alder swamp with Bane. We were searching for a missing dementia patient that had gone missing back in August.

At around 2pm I gave Bane a rest. We went back to my patrol car, he got some water and about fifteen minutes to cool off.

At 2:15 we went back out searching. After about five minutes he was tangeled up in the tags. (I had him on a 20 ft tracking lead)

I dropped the lead to untangle him. About the time I got him free, a deer that had been bedded and was less than five yards from me jumped up and ran directly in front of Bane.

Bane gave chase. He was out of sight in about a second and I have not seen him since.

I am confident he is not caught up in the woods. The lead is made of nylon. He has eaten them in the past, just for fun. In addition, I had him on the 'dead ring' of the check chain. This means that it is not able to tighten around his neck and he can slip his head out of it. He has done this numerous times in the past so it is not a concern to me.

We have searched a huge area, including using some of our other canine teams, a departmental helicoptor (with thermal imaging) and two fixed wing aircraft.

We have handed out flyers in a thirty mile radius around where he was last seen.

We had two possible sightings of him on 11/15/10 approximately 8 miles south of where I lost him.

I am asking that if anyone responds to search the area, please stay in your cars until after the firearm deer season. It is simply to risky to be in the woods with all of the guns out there.

The news media has been great, but the more publicity we have, the better chance we have of getting him back.

detroit doghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03636798112379229385noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354559675101812834.post-41936028409122876842010-08-14T16:34:00.001-04:002010-08-14T16:36:01.398-04:00Heeling Autism - Service Dogs For The AutisticHeeling Autism is a program of Guiding Eyes For The Blind, based in New York. After 7 months of fostering Star is Rising, we've decided to adopt her! Star is a quirky girly-girl, and a real sweetie-pie. She's a big 75-lb. girl, and we suspect is not all greyhound -- she's just too atypical. Star is very vocal, loves to jump into and lay in the water and in the driveway and mud. I think she'd be greyt for camping! And, she loves to sniff and smell everything and everyone very thoroughly. Silly girl!detroit doghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03636798112379229385noreply@blogger.com6
