Detroit Dog first learned of this hotline about a week after I adopted Bastet (RIP) in 1997. I left my apartment for about 15-minutes, and when I came back discovered that Bastet had somehow opened my snap-shut backback and pulled out my medications -- which were sprawled across the floor. Since I wasn't sure she'd eaten any, I called animal poison control. They were very helpful -- and thanks to them I learned how to make a dog vomit! (Because they thought the meds might not have yet 'disintegrated' into her digestive system, they had me give Bastet several tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide - the type you purchase in the brown bottle - and she threw up immediately within a matter of seconds. Then I had to keep watch over her for about 4 hours to watch for side effects; this all happened close to midnight.) This was a good trick to learn, as I had to use it a few times more during Bastet's life (poor girl) when she swallowed some things that otherwise could have been dangerous to her.

(However, always call your vet in an emergency!)

  2. My bible is Prevention Magazine's Doctor's Guide to Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats. I am so careful to put things like elastic bands and pins in the garbage right away, but you're right; you can't always anticipate it they might find a way to get at.

  3. Thanks for the information about the hydrogen peroxide to induce vomit in dogs.

Even though I try so hard to imagine all the "what ifs", I know something will get past me, sometime.

So glad things worked out for you!
